At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

dhb's Extreme Winter Gloves are designed, as the name implies, to protect your hands in cold and wet weather. And they do just that.

I've used them on the bike when the temperature's been hovering between zero and five degrees and they've kept my hands very warm indeed, right down to the finger tips. I also gave the gloves the rigorous road.cc hosepipe test, and can confirm that the waterproof membrane keeps out the water.

Comfort is good. The gloves have an 'anatomic cut', like some other cycling garments, meaning the fingers are curved, to better fit your hands when holding the bars. This means less rucking of the fabric, so less chafing. In addition, the inside of the glove has a very soft lining, and the palm is padded for a bit of extra comfort. There are also strips of silicon across the palm meaning grip is good even in the wettest conditions.

A Velcro tab ensures the gloves is close fitting round the wrist and you don't get a draught , but the cuff isn't especially long, so you'd need to make sure your jersey or top has decent length sleeves, so as not to get a cold gap.

These gloves normally retail for a penny under £30, currently reduced to around £26 on the Wiggle website (dhb is Wiggle's inhouse brand). There are similar gloves at similar prices, but you can also pay double or triple that for winter gloves from the premium brands, so this price represents fair value.

Verdict

Gloves that keep your hands warm and dry in bad weather - ideal for winter riding.

The Wiggle website says: 'This is a thick glove for worst winter conditions. An integrated waterproof membrane makes sure you stay dry inside. Hollow fill insulation provides fantastic warmth. Articulated cut helps to reduce bulk."

All very reasonable claims.

The Wiggle website goes on to say: "Soft brushed lining for comfort. Articulated fit with reflex knuckle box, to allow unrestricted movement. Slim cuff design so that glove can easily be worn under (or over) rain shell. Soft nose wipe. Reflective details on knuckle and small finger. Padded Micro PU palm will absorb the bumps of the road. Too early to comment on durability, but construction is very good, so these gloves will definitely last a winter season - more of you look after them.

No especially featherweight, but that's not really a problem on winter gloves

Palms and fingers are very comfortable, but one point docked for the slightly short cuffs.

Not an absolute bargain, but a very fair price for what you get
