At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Like the Sugoi HotShot II, the HotShot III is a versatile and adaptable long-sleeved jersey. Thanks to its full front zip, fabric, cut and styling, it functions equally well as a training jacket (with a warm base layer underneath), as a cool-weather jersey (on its own or with a light base layer), or as a really cold weather mid-layer (underneath a windproof gilet).

The cut is generous and has a good body length. The medium size I reviewed was easily large enough for a UK size 12-14, and should suit women of all heights and limb length, except perhaps the very short. The cut is contoured but not tight fitting, which adds to its adaptability for layering options.

The fabric is a smooth, pull-resistant outer fabric with a super-soft fleecy backing, designed to improve warmth and quickly wick moisture away from the skin. It’s very comfortable to wear, with the fabric moving sweat away from the skin and keeping you dry and your temperature stable no matter how hard you’re working. It’s also washable at 40 degrees, so it’s easier to keep it odour free than many ‘30 degree wash only’ technical garments.

Features include two decent-sized pouch pockets at the rear, one with an additional zipped security pocket for your phone and/or valuables. There’s a silicone gripper at the hem that stops the jersey riding up, even when you’re on the drops. A small reflective logo adds a bit of nighttime visibility.

The HotShot III’s overall performance is excellent, and it’s a great looking top as well. It’s available in a variety of attractive colours.

Verdict

Warm and versatile winter jersey that’s excellent value for money

Warm and comfortable to wear. Maintained stable body temperature with little perspiration build up.

Rate the product for durability:

8/10

Fabric washes well at 40 degrees so should last a good while. Odour build up might become a problem with the 100% polyester fabric.

Rate the product for weight, if applicable:

9/10

Great weight to warmth ratio.

8/10

Comfortable to wear with baselayer. Probably slightly too generous a cut for wear next to skin.

Excellent comfort with baselayer, though.
