Nice looking lock, but locks aren't really about looks

At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

There's plenty to be said in favour of a combination lock: you don't need to carry a key and it's a neat solution for popping into town. It still has a job to do though, that of keeping your bike safe from nefarious types, and that's where the Abus Tresor falls down: it simply isn't strong enough.

The Tresor 1385 features a four-cylinder barrel that's user configurable to whatever code you want, and a 7mm hardened steel square link chain with a nylon cover to protect your paintwork. It's available in black, blue, pink and brown. Sorry, black, acqua, coral and lyriabraun.

Abus say that the Tresor is "Good protection at medium theft risk, recommended for securing low-price bicycles" so they don't big it up too much but the level 7 protection it purportedly offers is one above Abus' Buffo 34 U lock which gave us four minutes of fun before it finally gave up. The Tresor took one look at our beefy bolt croppers and threw its hands up, surrendering in 20 seconds. Whatever the theft risk or the price of your bike, that ain't enough in our book. You can buy decent locks for this kind of money, so we can't really recommend this one, however many colourways it comes in.

Verdict

Nice looking lock, but thieves will like the look of it too
