At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

As well as carbohydrate, these gels contain protein, caffeine and guarana to help maximise your performance.

Everyone knows that carbs provide plenty of energy but we’re firm believers in filling the fuel tanks with more besides during exercise. Each of these 40g sachets provides a reasonable 107 calories of energy, including 25g of carbs. You also get 4.45mg of caffeine which, to be honest, isn’t much – a cup of filter coffee has over 100mg – along with and 49mg of guarana to heighten your mental alertness and increase your energy supply from your body’s reserves of fatty acids.

There’s also a small amount of protein in here – 1.8g, to be precise – including PeptoPro, a peptide that your body can quickly and easily use to look after your muscles when you’re working hard.

It’s really easy to bite or tear the top off the sachet from the saddle so getting the gel down is no problem at all, and the red orange flavour that we had does taste good – slightly tangy and not too sweet, even when you’re onto your fifth of the day.

It’s always a case of 'suck it and see' when it comes to nutritional products, but we reckon these are certainly worth a go for that little bit of extra protein – it might just give you that edge you’re looking for.

These are free of gluten, wheat, nuts and gelatine and are suitable for veggies. They're not expensive either.

Verdict

Energy gel with added stimulants and protein to improve your performance - tasty with it
