Green bike cleaner that demands extra ingredient on really dirty bikes – elbow grease
Weight: 470g Contact: www.pedros.com
The Pedros brand is known for its environmentally sound credentials, and this bike wash is true to the ethos. You can spray it on your bike, wash it off, and the resulting effluent running down the drain won’t harm Planet Earth.
To test it, I used Green Fizz on my training bike after a couple of long rides, including an audax on some narrow Cotswold lanes, so it was spattered in a good mix of dust, mud and cow poo. For the purposes of the test, I left the bike in the garage for a few days to let these delightful ingredients set nicely.
The 475ml tube comes with its own spray head and is easy to use. According to the label safe for use on all bike parts, including carbon, so I slapped it on all over.
The label gives no indication if you’re supposed to leave it for a bit to start dissolving (neither does the Pedros website), but I took a guess and waited for a minute or so before turning on the garden hose.
On the frame and wheels, as I rinsed off the Green Fizz it gripped most of the muck and took it with it. Some of the more persistent splats needed a bit of help with a brush. So far, so good.
But on the chain, chainwheel and cassette, it seemed to have little impact. I’ve used other bike cleaners that carry off a lot of the black grime that collects in these areas. Green Fizz found this a struggle. I’m guessing it’s because there are no industrial solvents in the brew, thanks to its eco-friendly nature. However, I’ve used other eco-friendly cleaners - notably Muc-Off - that seem to do the job better.
A tube of green fizz costs between £5 and £10, depending on the size you buy.
Overall, I’d recommend Green Fizz for cleaning a bike that kept mainly to nice dry roads. For dirtier bikes, but you’ll need to add another ingredient: a bit of elbow grease. But maybe that’s the price we all have to pay for not wrecking the planet.
