At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The women's Alé PRR Bering Long Sleeved Jersey is very comfortable and a bit of an eye-stopper. In this bright fluorescent yellow and pink colourscheme it's perfect for darker nights, and the warmth it provides makes it great for autumn and spring, and between the two with a bit of judicious layering.

The seasons are undoubtedly changing, and even though it has been unseasonably warm of late it is getting cooler. The Alé Bering jersey, with its pro look and quality feel, has meant warm and comfortable rides for me over the last month or so. It's warm enough to wear on its own, and of course can be boosted with a baselayer and/or jacket when it gets really cold.

With the weather being so mild, the jersey's breathability has been really put to the test, and it's passed with flying colours. Any time I started to build up a sweat the fabric just wicked it away, leaving me feeling warm and comfortable.

The thermal stretch fabric means it fits very well too. As the jersey is designed for keen riders or racers, it has a race fit, which means close, and it does come up true to size. If you like a bit of room in your jerseys you'll need to size up.

With that close fit there is no fabric bunching up anywhere, and the hem sits flat courtesy of the 'J-stability' system. There's the usual silicone gripper, but around the sides and front you get a double-layer elastic fabric (an internal carbon fabric and an external micro-perforated material). It's a "shaped elastic system [which] effectively maintains garment position' according to Alé. I have to say it works well.

The jersey has plenty of detailing, as you might expect from a quality Italian garment. The anatomical cuffs give the sleeves a good length and added warmth. The full zip is great for ventilation, and there are also two zipped vents that can be used when you start to warm up. The collar is soft and high enough to keep out cool draughts.

The Bering is windproof and, surprisingly for a jersey, pretty water-resistant too (Alé makes no claims for this). I ran it under the tap for a good 60 seconds and water never touched my skin. Water doesn't bead off, but the jersey would survive for a decent amount of time in the rain before you wanted/needed to stop.

On the rear, the jersey has three standard pockets, all of which are deep enough for your ride essentials. There is also a zipped pocket that will fit a decent sized smartphone (I tested it with an HTC One M8).

The Bering is certainly pricey, there's no denying that, but I would say you get what you pay for here. It's windproof and warm, with a bit of water-resistance too. It is a great choice for this time of year and should last you years. It's available in two other colourways too, if fluoro yellow isn't your thing: black/pink and purple/blue.

Verdict

Pricey, but worth the investment, a very good race-fit jersey for autumn through to spring

You say it's windproof but the men's jersey review on Road.CC says it's not windproof?
