At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

If you intend to do any reasonable bicycle maintenance at home, there comes a point when you need a high quality grease. Muc-Off's Bio Grease, developed for Team Sky, fits the bill and is eco-friendly as well. It even smells nice, which is unusual for a grease.

Muc-Off is best known for its pink cleaner but it has been expanding its range over the years and a partnership with Team Sky, famous for its fastidious attention to detail, has generated a raft of new products. The Bio Grease is, as its name suggests, biodegradable and uses a formulation derived from renewable resources.

The days of having having to carefully grease loose bearing headsets and bottom brackets are a long way behind us with most modern road bikes featuring sealed cartridge bearings. Grease is still recommended when assembling bottom brackets and headsets, so when I built up my Genesis Croix de Fer project bike, I put the Bio Grease to work.

The Bio Grease did a top notch job of protecting the bearings and provided a protective barrier from the crud that can slowly cause bearings in the lower headset and bottom bracket to grind to a halt. After several months of riding through pretty grim conditions, I opened up the headset and the grease, while no longer its original colour, was still doing a good job of protecting the bearings.

I've also been using the Bio Grease to keep my Speedplay pedals running smoothly as well, they need very regular greasing to keep in optimum condition. And it's been doing a good job there too. The Bio Grease also works a treat on gear and brake cables as well, and improved the poor rear brake performance on one recent test bike with sub optimal cable routing.

With 150g you should get plenty of use even if you have a large fleet of bikes to maintain, and at £10 it's a reasonable price considering the level of performance it offers. It's easy to apply with a large nozzle and did I mention it smells nice?

Verdict

Long-lasting, well priced, bearing protection. Smells nice too
