At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The Funkier WJ-1403 Storm jacket is a very packable, lightweight and waterproof jacket, but it's not as breathable as you would like it to be.

The jacket looks really good and seems packed with features, making it appealing. It is designed for women, and with this is mind it feels fitted when you wear it. It's loose enough to layer under and not too tight to move around in. It does rustle though, making it quite noisy every time you move.

The technical features of the jacket are very good. It has a mesh lined collar, two zipped front air vents and a rear air vent too. However, the vents don't work very well in practice and breathability of this jacket is a let down. The zipped vents just don't do much even when fully opened. I ended up sweating and it didn't have anywhere to go, leaving me soaked. I was cycling at a moderate pace in 6 degrees, the weather was dry on this particular ride.

Storage is not an issue with the Storm jacket. It has a front pocket and a large rear pocket for all your valuables. Both of these pockets have easy to grab zips and over-zip flaps preventing any rain getting in.

There is plenty of reflective detail around the pockets, down the front and the rear of the jacket. It's also bright pink (available in black and yellow), so day or night, I never felt visibility was an issue.

When tested in heavy rain, the jacket did perform well. Water flowed off leaving the outside almost dry. Again the only downside to this is that I was left damp from sweat. The arm seams did sit snugly and kept the rain out.

With a weight of 230g in a medium, it's a very packable jacket that does fold away small enough to stow. The price tag of £59.99 is fairly reasonable too for a waterproof jacket. However, the practicality of a jacket with limited breathability may well put a lot of people off.

Verdict

Good waterproofing, let down by lack of breathability

Make and model: Funkier WJ-1403 Storm Ladies Waterproof Jacket

Size tested: Medium - pink

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

The jacket is aimed at women cyclists. It's a foldaway jacket that should be perfect for sudden downpours. The manufacturers say "Funkier Bike's cycling apparel includes professional elements from the world of fashion - they look good and feel fantastic. The ultimate biking clothes are manufactured using advanced technologies and perspiration evaporating materials that enable air to enter and leave in both direction". I was disappointed by the lack of breathability of the fabric and the vents.

The jacket is waterproof, but this is let down by lack of breathability, meaning you end up soaked form the inside out.
