At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The Bontrager B2 long sleeve baselayer is an ideal choice for those milder rides where you still need a layer next to the skin under your jersey.

This base layer combines Profila Dry 37.5 fabric with merino wool on the back and arms to provide the balance between moisture transfer and keeping the rider warm.

It isn't a thick layer but it does a very good job of keeping your temperature regulated. It has a streamlined fit specifically for cyclists and also features a 8cm drop tail so you don't feel exposed when on your bike. The overall length is enough to enable you to tuck it in, this includes the front.

The sleeves are a decent length, a touch on the long side but they can be pulled up to prevent any bagginess. This all adds to the streamlined appearance. The mix of Profila Dry and merino wool make this quite a thin baselayer but that doesn't detract from its performance. Even in particularly cold temperatures with a jersey and jacket it has provided enough warmth. When the temperature has improved and I've found myself getting a bit warm it has handled the sweat but in warmer climes it can struggle to dispel the moisture quickly enough.

Presumably the merino wool properties also aid the ability to dispel any odour build-up. Wearing the Bontrager B2 long sleeve baselayer for consecutive days hasn't produced any nasty niffs so a thumbs up there.

Available in six sizes from XS through to XXL it is at the more expensive end of the spectrum. You'd have to part with the best part of fifty pounds for this baselayer. For a non-winter specific item this may appear steep, but it works very effectively.

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

The Bontrager B2 long sleeve baselayer is a lightweight layer worn next to the skin. It performs well, keeping the heat in but dealing with the moisture needing to go the other way. It prevents odours and overall is worth spending that little bit more.

Tell us some more about the technical aspects of the product?

Bontrager have achieved this blend by using the trademarked Profila Dry 37.5 technology. You might question what technology would feature in an item of clothing but as athletes demand better performances from their equipment, brands have to step up in their quest to provide it. Bontrager have used the 37.5 technology and combined this with merino wool on the back and arms of the B2 long sleeve baselayer to provide the balance between moisture transfer and keeping the rider warm despite this dampness.

It isn't a thick layer and only weighs 50g but it does a very good job of keeping your temperature regulated. It has a streamlined fit specifically for cyclists and also features a 8cm drop tail so you don't feel exposed when sat on your bike. The overall length is enough to enable you to tuck it in, this includes the front.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

I was impressed, given the lightweight feel I was sceptical at how the Bontrager B2 base long sleeve base layer would perform and indeed how durable it would be. It has however dispelled these doubts within a few wears.
