By Friday of a 12 to 15-hour training and commuting week I'm usually starting to struggle to get on the bike let alone try and do something constructive for the upcoming season. Yet since I've been using Myprotein's Whey Protein Plus I've been riding longer and harder. Impressive results and it tastes good too.

If like me your training regime is not the most structured in the world using recovery supplements is often the only way to keep you progressing. Whey protein has been used in the majority of sports for years and there are plenty of research papers out there to back up the theory. I've tried loads over the years with varying results, so what makes the Myprotein stuff so good?

First up is the taste. It doesn't matter how good the results are if you're going to retch after each mouthful before never making it again. The Strawberry Cream flavour tested here is lovely, it tastes just like a strawberry milkshake with no powder lumps or anything left behind after shaking and mixing. It also comes in Vanilla, Chocolate or Unflavoured.

Myprotein describe the Whey Protein plus as a concentrate made up of 80% whey protein along with fourteen vitamins and minerals, offering a minimum of 40% of your RDA. In their tests it's been shown to increase protein synthesis, speed recovery and improve endurance.

They've also added DigeZyme, a blend of digestive enzymes which helps the body absorb the protein and other ingredients so you get the most out of the drink from a nutritional point of view.

In our own, admittedly slightly unscientific testing I added 25g to 250ml of milk and drank this twice a day as per the recommendations and continued my riding as normal.

Basically I work long hours and have a hectic home life so most of my training takes place on the commute, about two hours a day, a weekend ride of two to three hours and a couple of turbo sessions chucked in for good measure. I'm always running late so a recovery, easy ride never happens with everything being a flat out smash fest. As I mentioned at the start by Friday morning I ache and usually mentally and physically exhausted.

I started taking the Whey Protein Plus on the Monday and by Friday I was still feeling pretty fresh, where I normally would have been on Wednesday (told you this was unscientific) and as far as the Saturday rides went I was feeling strong.

By the time the next Monday came round I was rested and fully recovered to start again.

Price wise it's competitive at £17.99 for a 1kg pouch and following the instructions to the letter you'll get forty servings out of that, a day under three weeks if like me, you take it seven days a week.

Overall the Whey Protein Plus made a massive improvement to my recovery even compared to other products I've taken in the past so it will definitely be part of my training program from now on and into next season's time trial campaign.

It was very palatable as well, a big bonus if you are required to drink it day in, day out. The fact it's very easy on the stomach makes a big difference to if you're on the bike every day.

Stu knocked out his first road.cc review back in 2009 and since then he's chucked the best part of seventy test bikes around the West Country, a couple of them quite literally! With three alloy and two steel bikes in his fleet he's definitely a metal man (that'll be the engineering background) but is slowly warming to that modern carbon fibre stuff along with fat tyres & disc brakes.
It's not all nostalgia though, after spending the last few years in product design Stu keeps banging on about how 3D printing is going to be the next big thing and he's a sucker for a beautiful paint job too.

Pity they use chlorinated sugar as the artificial sweetener in so many of their products.

Ok I've waited until now to comment.

I read the review and thought wow, these are exactly my experiences...at least the feeling nakered bit after 5 days fast commuting...so this got me a bit excited - could this product really make that much difference?

No. Not in my case it didn't. Sorry just didn't work. Not much more to say except I'm not buying it again. Horses for courses I suppose.
