At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Galius Pro claim that the Post-competition Oil, when massaged into tired legs will aid recovery. My experience is that the massage will aid recovery, the oil doesn't seem to bring any noticeable benefits to the party, but it did smell nice and my legs felt soft the next day.

It's simple to apply, just shower and then massage the very thick oil into the clean skin. It's better if performed by someone else but we don't all have that luxury on a daily basis.

And this is where it gets messy, like BigRingRiding SHOUTY messy!

The effect is indescribable (but I will try). It's like sitting in a bucket of ice then having a group of White Walkers stab you in the legs with their frosty fingers. SO COLD. Unbearably so.

Oh gosh it's spreading up the legs. Everywhere. (And this is where the male and female experience may differ). Gentlemen, don't, and I cannot stress this enough, allow your oil covered hands to come into contact with you man-bits in ANY way. It feels like they've been sprayed with a fire-extinguisher. It probably wouldn't be much fun on female soft tissues either, on reflection.

The cold - did I mention it was VERY cold? - lasts for about 20 minutes. This could be how Galius Pro get the recovery part to work. I simply couldn't sit still while the cold was doing its thing, and to make matter worse, my legs were barely able to function with the cold; the legs felt as if I had lost them.

Never in my life, and I've had ice form inside a boot whilst climbing in the Andes, have I felt cold like that. Never.

Once the cold goes away, it's all calm again. Hard to detect any additional benefit the next day other than the massage itself.

Not one to try too often, but definitely one to 'recommend' a mate tries!

Verdict

Hard to recommend from a performance point of view but maybe worth trying just for the experience

Make and model: Galius Pro Post-competition oil

Size tested: 100ml

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

Galius pro say that 'after practicing sport, massage improves circulation and oxygenation. Using Galius Post-Competition Oil relaxes the limbs after physical activity and helps muscles to recover'. All seems fairly safe, the massage part is the most key here though I think.

Tell us some more about the technical aspects of the product?

Contains essential oils such as Ginkgo, Hammamelis, Chestnut extracts and Aloe Vera. All pleasant enough, and legs felt softer in the morning!

HOLY COW, COLD!

It really depends on how much you can cope with the discomfort.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

COLD, so COLD.

Tell us what you particularly liked about the product

It smelled pleasant, and left legs feeling soft.

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

just too cold for me, any performance gains were masked by the discomfort levels.

Did you enjoy using the product? For the first 5 minutes.

Would you consider buying the product? Maybe before hearing about it. Not after!

Would you recommend the product to a friend? If they have a taste for ice baths - which basically this is, in a tube.

Anything further to say about the product in conclusion?

No idea if it did anything to aid recovery, other than provide an excuse to go for a massage. Any long-term gains for me seemed to be mitigated by short term discomfort.

Overall rating: 5/10
