At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Way back in the mists of time we took a look at the 09 version of this pump. Now we have the new, updated version to play with. Question is, have Lezyne improved it?

Well, yes they have. The main criticism that we had was that the valve was a cheap and faffy plastic arrangement which let down the rest of the package. Since then Lezyne have replaced the valve with a double ended Flip-Thread chuck made from alloy. You have to unscrew the chuck to select the correct end and then screw the chuck onto your tyre valve. It's a world away from the neat and simple smart-head arrangements that come as standard on more up to date pumps. That said, this is a proper workshop tool, not something that you'll be using with frozen fingers half way round a winter training ride so these are niggles, not serious criticisms. Besides, the screw-on chuck gives a very clean and secure attachment to the tyre which takes away the risk of snapping a delicate Presta valve. Despite the apparent awkwardness I really liked it.

Otherwise this is a fairly basic pump. It's got great retro-tastic looks but you don't get any of the niceties, like bleed valves or target indicators on the gauge. The shaft and foot feel sturdy, the gauge is clear and accurate and you get a nice long hose which loops over the handle in storage and keeps the whole thing tidy.

Verdict

Stylish and effective but pretty basic for the price. Updated alloy chuck is a big improvement over the old plastic version.

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

They don't say, but the Lezyne website does feature a spread from Esquire magazine entitled "Things A Man Should Own". Guess what? If you want to be a man then you'll be needing one of these.

Tell us some more about the technical aspects of the product?

Say Lezyne:-

# Aluminum foot; steel piston and barrel

# Varnished wood handle

# 47”/120cm extra-long, premium-grade hose

# Alloy Flip-Thread chuck threads securely to both Presta and Schrader valves

# Flip-Thread chuck and hose threads securely to foot when not in use

# Long travel piston with reduced barrel diameter lowers required pumping effort

# Oversized 2.5” diameter gauge assembly, 160psi max

7/10

Feels sturdy enough, but slightly rattly at the top of the stroke and it wheezes like an asthmatic horse.

Rate the product for performance:

Not bad at all. I got a 25c tyre up to 100psi in just over 20 strokes with no real effort.

Rate the product for durability:

8/10

There's nothing fragile or delicate about this pump. Should last for ages.

Rate the product for comfort, if applicable:

Nice handle.

Given the features that it doesn't have it feels a tad expensive for what it is.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

Pretty good and I do like the screw-on chuck.

Tell us what you particularly liked about the product

Screw-on chuck feels pleasingly secure.

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

Lacking in features for the price and there's a niggling sense that this is a lifestyle accessory as much as a pump.

Did you enjoy using the product? Yes

Would you consider buying the product? Maybe - but I wouldn't swap it for my regular Joe Blow Sprint

Would you recommend the product to a friend? I wouldn't put them off if they said they were buying one

Anything further to say about the product in conclusion?

Plenty of style and just enough substance.

Overall rating: 8/10
