At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Comtat's Ultra-light Carbon Bottle Cage certainly lives up to its name, weighing in at a mere 26g. The cage is constructed of a lacquered 3K carbon weave, which results in a high gloss black finish with the carbon weave showing through and the Comtat name picked out in white script.

From a purely aesthetic viewpoint, it has a classy, expensive look and finish that would complement any frame, but will no doubt appeal to those with carbon frames in particular.

Looks aren’t all you get though; the cage is very rigid and hardly deflects at all even when squeezed hard. At first, it was quite tight to slide a bottle into it, but the cage freed up a little once the initial tackiness of the lacquer wore off. It does still however, keep a very firm grip of the bottle, and hasn’t allowed it to move an inch unintentionally since fitting, with both 500ml and 750ml bottles (750ml being the maximum recommended size).

The design is such that it is easy to load and unload the bottle from the cage; the opening allows you to locate the bottle into the cage without having to look down too much, and the snug fit gives you confidence that you have located the bottle properly, and won’t hear it bouncing down the road when you let it go.

Verdict

This is a well made bottle cage with good looks to back up its solid performance, plus a price tag of only £19.99 making it good value for money, especially when compared with most of its direct competition.
