Muc-Off dry lube

Conventional wisdom has it that dry lubes are for fine, dry conditions. Fair enough, but this is Britain and we don't have a balmy Californian climate, we have weather in all its moist and infinite variety and any lube is going to have to earn its keep.

It's only fair to point out that Muc-Off only rate this lube for use in dry to damp conditions, so the torrential downpour that hit me on the first ride was over and above what you'd expect it to cope with. Muc-Off proudly describe it as biodegradable. For 'biodegradable' read 'water soluble' and sure enough the first application only lasted 36 miles and one shower. The second application managed to struggle on for 67 miles but after another wet commute the chain mice started singing again. That's pretty poor mileage and although your chain runs nice and clean, the trade-off in longevity isn't worth it.

In truth, this stuff is only going to be any use if you ride the track, or have a special summer Sunday machine that never sees a rain cloud. Even then there are better dry lubes out there.

Verdict

This really is the fairest of fair weather lubes, delicately blended from the laughter of tiny children and the tears of orphaned seals. The Pedros stuff I tested a few weeks back is much better.

Here's how we roll at road.cc: every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a real insight into whether it works or not. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The score reflects a product's function and value. Good scores are more common than bad, because fortunately good products are more common than bad. Here's what they mean:
