London's about to get its first Cycle Superhighways, but what do you think of dedicated routes and paths?

In view of the survey which British Cycling are currently doing on why more women aren't cycling, it would be interesting to analyse the responses to the mini-survey about dedicated cycle paths according to gender and age.

Following research which Sustrans carried out last autumn, 9000 women signed a petition calling for safer, separate cycling routes which was presented to the Minister for Transport in January (also the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly).

As someone involved in Youth cycling, we struggle to find off road routes where we can ride out with families and kids.

So - yes please - more of them so we can encourage the next generation of club and competition riders.

You don't have to use them if you don't want to...

I prefer cycle paths. I know I have the same right to be on the road and all that, but why fight for road space with a lorry the size of my house? I'm not going to win that one! Besides, good cycle paths in off road areas mean no traffic lights! Obviously, I wouldn't go out of my way to ride them, which is why we need more short routes protected from heavy traffic. If you are cycling to work, you need to use the shortest way possible, but if that shortes way are all A roads, that's not good either, is it?

It might be silly, but sometimes I get a kick when I ride in places where cars can't go! Wink

It's definitely worth exploring slightly longer alternatives if you have them.

In my London commuting days, I tended to avoid the main roads in from East Greenwich and stick as close to the river as possible.

Ok, it took a few minutes more to get to Borough Market for my morning caffeine hit, but nothing beats cycling along the deserted riverfront by the Royal Naval College, or the sight of Tower Bridge after the Paris Roubaix-style cobblestones of Rotherhithe High Street, and all on quiet roads or traffic-free paths.

Always put me in a great mood for the day, unlike those morning when I was running late and had to mix it with the traffic on the likes of the Jamaica Road.
