Jim Rees, who completed the 2009 Race Across America (RAAM) in 10 days and 20 hours, has set himself a challenge of completing a thousand miles on a Wattbike during the Cycle Show, as well as breaking the world record for 24hours of continuous cycling. Rees, who was featured on an ITV documentary about the RAAM, will attempt to complete his target mileage during the Earl’s Court show; he’ll need to rack up 250 miles a day, no mean feat.
Rees, who plans to tackle RAAM again in 2011, started training on a Wattbike at home last month. He said: “I enjoy being a normal guy who achieves things that people think aren’t possible. If you have the right mindset you can achieve anything, and through the things I do and say, I hope I can influence people positively. I am a big fan of the Cycle Show and I wanted to have a go at a tough challenge to benefit the Wallace and Gromit Foundation, which helps very sick children.
“I’m impressed with the Wattbike, it’s really easy to set up into the correct position and I’m not one for getting really cold and wet in the winter! The power meter is interesting too.”
Cycle Show visitors can guess how long it will take Rees to complete his odyssey, and there'll be prizes on offer. He will be located at the entrance to the show, so you won't miss him...
There are more opportunities to win with Wattbike through the indoor time trial. Any visitor entering the 500m time trial can win a trip for two to Club La Santa in Lanzarote or a trip to the Tour Downunder with Sports Tours International. Prizes will be drawn from all participants and there are bonus prizes for the fastest riders. The bar is currently set at 27.29seconds, the current 500m world record on the Wattbike.
