Shutt VR launch autumn clothing range

New performance jackets, merino jerseys and winter leg wear and new women's jersey range now available

Shutt VR have just launched their 2013/14 autumn UK-made clothing range, with the highlights including new women’s long sleeve jerseys, a new performance jacket and a commuting/urban cycling jacket, plus tights and caps.

They’ve updated their Performance Jacket (£149) for 2013, using their Winter Jacket from a couple of years ago a starting point. They’ve sourced the fabric from Swiss company Eschler, using their Comfort System. This is a three layer fabric that is windproof, water resistant, insulation and breathable.

Shutt combine it with three rear pockets plus a waterproof lined pocket, lots of reflective piping and panels, and a storm flap. It’s not a fully waterproof as the seams aren’t  taped, as is necessary to ensure a jacket is 100% waterproof. It’ll be more than good enough for a decent shower or two though.

Shutt venture further into the casual clothing market, garments that look and work well off the bike, with the new Active Jacket (£99). It’s made from a three layer soft shell fabric to provide good resistance to rain and wind, with a micro-fleece lining to provide insulation. For commuting and urban cycling there’s discreet reflective details and front zipped hip pockets. The hem is adjustable with a drawstring.

It’s time to wrap up the knees, and here are their Roubaix ¾ Bib Knicks (£99). They’re constructed from a Roubaix fabric with a 10 panel design and feature their own padded insert with anti-bacterial finish. There’s a high zipped from to provide an extra layer of fabric over the stomach area. Flat seams keep the comfort factor high.

Their Roubaix Bib Tights (£89) are made from a Thermo-Roubaix fabric with a brushed lining. The outside has a water repellant treatment. They have no padded insert, they’re designed to be worn over your favourite bib shorts. They’ve designed in a good deal of overlap with the lower torso, to provide extra insulation for the stomach. A long front zipper makes it easier to get in and out of them.

In Shutt’s own words, it’s been a busy year. They’ve sponsoring two cycling teams this year, Shutt Squadra Donne and Twenty3c-Focus, and are committed to supporting women’s cycling with sponsorship of the Women’s Team Series and 3 Days of Bedford. Showing this commitment to women’s cycling, they have three new women’s jerseys this autumn; the Classic, Sportive and Signature. Each has been tested and developed by the Squadra Donne team, and they’ve apparently been four years in development.

The Sportive (£99) is a long sleeve jersey loosely based on the men’s jersey of the same name, but they’ve worked hard on the fit and shape of the jersey. It’s made from Merino Perform, a mid-weight fabric that should see it being ideal for the changeable conditions of autumn as a top layer, or in the winter as a mid-layer with a jacket over the top. It has a full-length zip, reinforced pockets and fourth zipped pocket, and reflective hem details.

The Classic (£99) is made from a summer weight Merino Perform fabric with a full-length zip lined with reflective material, along with a reflective hem. There’s Shutt’s signature colour banner on the arm. There’s three regular pockets around the back and one extra zipped pocket, ideal for safely stowing your house keys.

With the signature colour bands boldly across the chest, the Signature long sleeve jersey (£79) has also been redesigned for 2013. It’s constructed from Merino Perform fabric with the same full-length zip, reinforced pockets, waterproof zipped pocket and reflective hem as the other jerseys in the range.

No outfit is complete at this time of year without a cycling cap, and Shutt have two new caps this season. The Ltd Edition PalePink Tweed cap (£39) is made by hand at their Leicester factory from 100% wool tweed, which is sourced from Trefriw Wollen Mills in Wales. They’re constructed with a three panel design, and lined with a breathable and anti-static fabric. Can be worn under a helmet, one size fits all. As the name suggests, they’re doing a limited run of the caps, just 14 in fact. So hurry if you want one.

The Ltd Edition Green Tweed cap (£39) is similarly limited, to just 28. It’s made from Manx Tweed in their Leicester factory, with a jade lining and orange detailing and embroidery.

There’s also a new Signature Buff (£15), a genuine Buff garment finished with their unique colour band design.

Love the Shutt gear too, wear one of their jerseys most rides, and like the look of the cap BUT... there's no size guide for it on the website; just 'one size fits all'.

Anyone with a big head like mine knows that 'one size' generally doesn't fit, and you need eg a Walz L/XL. I don't buy caps without a size any more as its unlikely to work for me.

Disclaimer: I am a Shutt whore. For the last year I've been riding in nothing else, and the kit is excellent.

I did 3hrs/75km in 3 degress / pissing rain / wind in Belgium in February, and was toasty warm with just the short-sleeved merino jersey and the Performance jacket. It's *that* good.

Likewise the 3/4 and full tights are excellent.

My only issue is that at 73kg/6' tall with ape-ish arms their sizing is not perfect for me - they cater more toward the typical European frame, so whippets, shop with care. You might find that for a snug fit around the shoulders/tum, the arms are an inch or two short. Or for bib shorts (not the 3/4 or tights though) a snug fit around the legs means too tight at the straps.

But don't let my personal issues put you off. PEte and Lauren are top folks. And the Tweed caps are perfect for cooler days - warm even when soaked.
