Fresh appeal for witnesses to Aberdeen assault that left cyclist with serious facial injuries

Police Scotland are checking CCTV footage but still need to trace suspect and driver of van he was in

Police in Scotland have issued a fresh appeal for witnesses to a road rage incident in Aberdeen last week in which a cyclist received serious facial injuries.

The victim, a 51-year-old man, is still in hospital recovering from the injuries he sustained during the attack, which took place last Friday 14 June at 08.3am on Auchinyell Road, Garthdee.

Officers are seeking to trace an occupant of a white van, described as being similar to a Fiat Doblo [the original witness appeal at the weekend stated it was similar to a Ford Transit – ed].

The man in question, aged between 20 and 25 years, 5 feet 10 inches tall with a slim, muscular build, fair hair and dressed in light-coloured top, trousers and trainers, was said to have been involved in a dispute with the cyclist prior to the alleged assault.

Police have also said they would like to speak to the van’s driver, whom they believe may have vital information.

PC Craig Smith of the Aberdeen City Division's Alcohol and Violence Reduction Unit commented: "I would again urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or may have seen the two individuals arguing in the street at the time to contact us.

"We are currently checking CCTV in the area and speaking to witnesses, but I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw the incident or the white van, or knows anything about this matter and hasn't yet spoken to officers."

Inspector Mark Cochrane of the local Community Policing Team added: "We need the Garthdee community to come together and work with us to help solve this investigation.

"If you have information that could help, I cannot stress enough how important it is that you come forward and speak to the police.

"This is a shocking incident for not only those involved, but it also affects the rest of the Garthdee community. Thankfully this type of incident is rare.

"The Community Policing Team will be patrolling in the area and you might see police officers carrying out their enquiries so if you do know who is responsible, please come forward and speak to us."

Anyone who has information is requested to contact Police Scotland on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Aberdeen and the shire is full of aggressive and ignorant drivers and it isn't all boy racers. At a local TT tonight, I had a very aggressive passenger swear and berate me as he and his elderly wife had been held up on a rural road for two mins by cyclists! Perhaps he would rather the youths that were racing come round and throw stones at his windows - pathetic.
