Share your ride with the scooteRack + video

Designer invents collapsible scooter that attaches to a bike to share the ride

by David Arthur @davearthur   June 10, 2013

You think you’ve seen it all, then something like the scooteRack comes along. Designer Jared Loveless has created a collapsible scooter that fixes to the rear of the bicycle and lets you share your ride with anyone brave enough to hop on. The passenger can even contribute to the forward motion by scooting with their foot.

When your passenger has had enough, the scooter neatly folds away and becomes a rack, so you can use it to carry luggage back from the shops. It’s clearly well designed and functions, as the video below shows. It’s quite an ingenious design solution to a problem we’ve never thought of before; how to get scooter mad children into cycling, perhaps?

Jared says he invented the scooteRack because: “I want to see more people use bicycles to get around.  Imagine if you could double the number of bicycle users without doubling the number of bicycles.” What do you think? Could it catch on?

Talking of daft products that help you share the ride, this reminds us of the Vigurvant, a set of pedals with extensions so a friend can hitch a ride on the rack (if you've got one) and contribute to the pedalling.

Surely it's not solving a problem at all; it's offering an alternative mode of bicycle related transport. I can see it being popular with a particular type of clientele, but it's not for me just yet.

I can see that being good for taking kids to school then cycling on to the office.... They would learn road sense in a safe way plus get some exercise. Needs to be cheap... but a great idea

Good luck to him!

Fun, but pointless, and unnecessarily dangerous. It doesn't have the independence and appeal of scooter or a skateboard. Limited appeal really.

The background for the idea seems cuckoo. I can't see it add to the appeal of cycling. Why not fat tires and double suspension? Surely that would bring more people to cycling?
