Seven models based on two frames in the first range with prices from £550 to £1,300

The HOY range of bikes, a collaboration by the eponymous Sir Chris and Evans Cycles, have finally broken cover with all the details, spec and pricing available on a dedicated website at www.hoybikes.com. The bikes will, naturally, be available to buy through Evans Cycles stores, and online.

We've covered the development of the bikes over the first part of the year, most recently in a blog by designer James Olsen about what it's been like to work with an Olympic legend to create the bikes, but now they're here and we can bring you the full details of the range.

There's two frames – a road frame and an urban frame – and each is available in a number of builds. The Shizuoka urban bike comes in four different builds (001 to 004) priced between £550 and £900 and the Sa Calobra road bike starts at £850 for the 002 with the 004 coming in at £1,300. So there's presently seven bikes, with an eighth (the Sa Calobra 001) imminent and further models (track bikes and kids' bikes) on the way later in the year.

Both of the frames are alloy (6061 T6 for the Shizuoka and 6066 T6 for the Sa Calobra) and feature triple-butted tubes. The road fork is a full-carbon affair with a tapered steerer (1 1/8" to 1 1/2") with the urban range using two forks, an aluminium unit for the lower-priced bikes and a carbon/alloy fork for the 003 and 004. The Shizuoka has a standard 1 1/8" head tube.

All of the urban bikes are disc-equipped and they're hydraulic right down to the £550 Shizuoka 001 which gets Tektro HDC300 stoppers. Tektro's Auriga Pro brakes are used on the top-spec bike. Transmission-wise the Shizuokas use a variety of SRAM flat bar shifters and road transmission parts. On the Sa Calobra it's all Shimano though, with full Ultegra on the 004, 105 on the 003 and Tiagra on the 002. FSA cranks knock a bit off the cost of the build.

To launch the bikes Sir Chris and his Evans entourage will be embarking on a whistlestop tour of the country the week of 17–22 June taking in London, Surrey, Staffordshire, Sheffield, Manchester and Glasgow. Ten rides are planned and there'll be an open-to-all ride near Bath on 19 June, details of that are yet to be confirmed. In the evenings Sir Chris will be talking about his new bikes at Evans Stores, with London Mortimer St, Wimbledon, Cardiff, Sheffield, Manchester Chill Factore and Edinburgh the locations. track bikes are coming, but getting the road and urban bikes out was the priority. sounds like they have something a bit posh lined up for track

First impression is that this looks like a direct challenge to the Boardman range... But not priced or specced so well.

The £900 Shizuoka hybrid is quite poorly equipped if compared to the Boardman team hybrid at £750.

Yeah .. erm ... well ... hum.

That's about all I can summon up. Nothing is particularly inspiring and, to be honest, interesting. The paint work is particular boring. I know he's thought of as being a grim Scot, but even so. Would a little colour have killed him. Look at Merkx bikes!

I'm left wondering where these fit in with Evans own brand pinnacle bikes, which are similarly worthy but visually unremarkable. Would be entirely unsurprised if they came off the same production line.

It sort of sums up the road bike and hybrid market though. There isn't much that is exciting. It pretty much comes down to whether you like the paint job or not. There is so little to distinguish bikes from different manufacturers when all the components are the same and they are all made in the same place of the same materials. I think we all get a bit blasé about it.

I think this why there is a rise in popularity for British or European made framesets. Just look at how popular Bespoked Bristol show was. This celebrated individuality and products made by people who put a stamp of difference onto the bike. Plus it was made by someone who cared about the art of cycling.

Looks good to me, even more reason now not to pay crazy money for a good new bike. Cant wait to see the Track bikes though  3 Its inconceivable that Sir C H would drop the ball on any bike but you got to expect a decent track bike. Hope he sells them in the UK! Boardmans best track bikes are only for sale in france.

£1000 105 equipped bike equals cycle scheme winner. This years bikes are poorly specced/priced from other brands and this one will clean up because it is directly competing on the same shop floor as Spesh and others offering taigra.

Seems to be bang up against the Giant Defy 1 - simmilar spec with a highly regarded aluminium frame. Shame the D1 has an awful colour scheme this year, I put this down as a conspiracy to tempt me to spend extra on the Defy 0 and its shiny blackness. New boilder means no new bike though.

It helps when you're selling direct via Evans. No distributor margin to factor in = some saving to the consumer but still a more than adequate profit margin.

Saw some of these in Evans' window at lunchtime. Look a bit smarter in the flesh but I still fail to understand why anyone would ever want to buy one. No disrespect to the great man but simply having his surname on the side of yet another identikit Taiwanese cookie-cutter of a bike is not sufficient motivation to splash the cash.

Also, the guy is famous for A) riding track bikes and B) riding BMXs before. Surely the range should have at least one of these bikes in it? And would we really trust a man who has spent his whole life on fixies to advise on which gearing is best?  3
