Giro stage 20 re-routed due to continuing bad weather

Three passes removed after heavy snow but it's still a summit finish... for now...

As has been widely expected, the organisers of the Giro d'Italia have decided to re-route stage 20 of the race. Continuing heavy snow has made many of the high roads in northern Italy impassable.

The casualties tomorrow are the three passes – Costalunga, San Pellegrino and Giau – on the way to the finish at Tre Cime di Lavaredo. For the moment the summit finish is still included; clearly the road conditions and weather are less of a danger to the riders going up than down, although the continuing snowfall has to cast serious doubts over the viability of the 2,304m summit.

The route of the stage is now slightly longer, at 210km as opposed to the original 203km.

Shame so many spectacular climbs have been removed. Hope it doesn't diminish Nibali's achievements in anyone's eyes- he's been head and shoulders above the rest so far.

If Wiggins won't come to the mountains, the mountains just go away.

Is that 1 115 km climb from the 55km mark?!

Nope, it's the exaggerated profile that makes it look that way. Take out that little kick up in the meddle and the average gradient is around 1 per cent.

Don't think Cav will be upset if a break goes and takes the intermediate sprint points at the first TV, although it's certainly one he could potentially take points at if he's around?

Glad I didn't plan a lovely sunny break in Italy around this year's Giro!
