Manchester cyclists back Dutch style cycle path proposals

Oxford road plans for buses, cars and bikes shown

Proposals for Dutch-style cycle lanes on Manchester's Oxford Road are to go to public consultation - but they have already been welcomed by cyclists in the city.

The council has pledged £54 million to improve the way people can get about the city by bus and bike.

The cycle lanes are particularly carefully designed around bus stops and are completely traffic-free, as they run along on the pavement separated from cars by a kerb.

Under the plans a mile long stretch would be completely free of cars. If they are approved, work would start next year and be finished in 2015.

Pete Abel, from the Love Your Bike campaign group, told the Manchester Evening News: “Love Your Bike has been lobbying for Dutch-style cycle routes on the Oxford Road corridor since the first consultation in 2009.

“We welcome the new designs and will be encouraging people to respond positively to the consultation.

“Most people would love to cycle but do not feel safe on the roads. A Dutch-style cycle network would encourage more people to cycle more often.

“Love Your Bike hopes that the Greater Manchester Cycling City Ambition bid is successful so we can begin to create a Dutch-style network across the whole of Greater Manchester.”

Coun Andrew Fender, chairman of the TfGM Committee, said: “With traffic level rising, it’s crucial that we make sure people can easily get around our city by more suitable transport – in this case by bus, bike or on foot.

“Oxford Road is one of the busiest bus routes in Europe and we want it to offer a European style travel experience, not just for bus passengers, but pedestrians and cyclists.”

Er. No. It's been welcomed by one person affiliated with a pressure group (FoE) who has set up another pressure group and a badly maintained website.

That's not Manchester's cyclists. That's one person.

You'd get a more considered and representative opinion by crashing a Raleigh Chopper into a crate of fermented fruit on the middle of Oxford Road, letting loose a horde of half-starved deranged gibbons, and asking the gibbons if they think cycle lanes are a good idea.

It'd be better if the cyclist just went to Upper brook street and cycled there. There are simply too many buses pulling in and out, or alternatively tell the students to cycle in stead of taking the bus [that's why there are so many buses], they only take a 10 minute ride anyway, quite why they all insist on living in Fallowfield when it's so far from uni is beyond me, move to Hulme or Ardwick for heavens sake, at least MMU worked that out.

besides the roads fine (I use it), except for rusholme where the road rules simply don't apply, double/triple parking stopping at will to yell to a mate, cars doors swinging open without looking, I've seen it all. there ought to be no on street parking between Whitworth park and Platt fields

Better for who? That road's full of angry drivers and massive potholes, and the bit where it goes single carriageway (but the drivers don't want to filter, so keep going in double file) is a nightmare!

Give me Rusholme any day of the week!

Yeah, but when you inevitably get hit by a car you are virtually outside the entrance to A&E thus lessening the load on the Ambulance service.
