French star was unconscious when emergency services arrived and has multiple fractures, says French press

Laurent Jalabert has been seriously injured after being hit by a car while riding his bike near Montauban in southern France. According to press reports, the 44-year-old was unconscious when emergency services arrived at the incident, which happened at around 12.45pm local time, although he did regain consciousness as he was treated. According to L'Equipe, he has suffered multiple fractures including the tibia and fibula of his left leg.

During his riding career, most of which was spent with the Spanish outfit ONCE, Jalabert twice won both the mountains and points classifications of the Tour de France twice, was overall winner of the Vuelta in 1995 and of Paris-Nice three-times, and had victories in some of the sport's biggest one-day races including Milan-San Remo and the Giro di Lombardia. He was also world time trial champion in 1997. Nicknamed JaJa, he retired from racing in 2002, having spent his final two seasons with CSC.

Born in Scotland, Simon moved to London aged seven and now lives in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds with his miniature schnauzer, Elodie. He fell in love with cycling one Saturday morning in 1994 while living in Italy when Milan-San Remo went past his front door. A daily cycle commuter in London back before riding to work started to boom, he's been news editor at road.cc since 2009. Handily for work, he speaks French and Italian. He doesn't get to ride his Colnago as often as he'd like, and freely admits he's much more adept at cooking than fettling with bikes.

Doesn't matter how careful a Cyclist rides , there will be some nutter , asleep at the wheel , willing to risk their licence , to save seconds on their journey ! Biggest problem being the benign magistrates that think this is NORMAL !

Jaja being a competent Cyclist would have been fully aware of the Pain & Suffering coming his way , unlike most cyclists who are unaware of what hit them .

Hurry up and get WELL , Jaja , you are needed in Corsica to celebrate the 100th Edition of " Le Tour "! Without your commentary TV france will be lacking in credibility .
