Donhou Bicycles move to London

Change of location for custom frame builder Donhou, moving from Norfolk to London

Donhou Bicycles, the award winning custom frame building company that has built a frame for the Rapha Continental project and been star of shows such as Bespoked Bristol, is upping sticks and leaving Norfolk, where it all started, for a new home in London.

Tom Donhou has only been building frames for a couple of years, but has enjoyed a meteoric rise. His frames are lusted over and coveted by the lucky few who own one of his creations. The move is simply because he's outgrown the Norwich workshop where it all started. And describing the draw of the big city as ‘too much’, will be taking up residency in Hackney in east London.

The new facility should provide the extra space the company needs to expand and ‘lots more light’ but don’t worry, they’re not forgetting their roots, saying there will ‘Norfolk blood in every frame, though they will now be made in London.’

Donhou frames have scooped many accolades and won many fans in the couple of years they've been going. The Donhou Continental (pictured at the top of this article) is a beautiful lugged Reynolds 853 steel frame which the lucky Sam Humpheson enjoys the ride of. It’s thoroughly modern with the fitting of mechanical disc brakes and a carbon fibre cyclocross fork.

Being a full custom service Donhou  will build you whatever you want, but he is also more than happy to advise on getting the right configuration of tubing to get you the ride you want. He likes to spend time talking to his clients so he can really understand exactly what it is they want.

David worked on the road.cc tech team from 2012-2020. Previously he was editor of Bikemagic.com and before that staff writer at RCUK. He's a seasoned cyclist of all disciplines, from road to mountain biking, touring to cyclo-cross, he only wishes he had time to ride them all. He's mildly competitive, though he'll never admit it, and is a frequent road racer but is too lazy to do really well. He currently resides in the Cotswolds, and you can now find him over on his own YouTube channel David Arthur - Just Ride Bikes

Tom built me my commuter. He's a great guy to work with and I love the bike.

I can understand the move to London, a bigger workshop, a bigger market, the guy's running a business afterall!

Maybe he (Tom) just fancied living in London? It's not a bad place to live, I should know. I'm sure the bicycles he makes will be just as lovely

I don't think Hackney is a good environment for producing exquisitely crafted yet practical bicycles like the ones pictured above. Too many overpaid Londoners wanting something ludicrous to hang on a lamp post outside the Duke of York so that can pretend to be messengers. He should have become a Bunburyist: making sensible bikes in the country under one name, and making hipster bikes in London under another. Still, good luck to him.
