World champion para-cyclist Jody Cundy has been knocked off his bike while training on Mallorca, luckily without sustaining serious injury. Cundy, aged 34, tweeted that he was hit by a car he was overtaking, with the driver indicating he was turning in one direction but instead going the other way.

Cundy, who is reigning C4 kilo world champion but was unable to add the Paralympic title in London last summer when he was controversially denied a restart after his rear wheel got stuck in the starting gate, recounted today's incident on Twitter.

"First half of my ride today went really well, and was feeling pretty good for the return leg home, even bumped into the legend @JiriJezek74 [the Czech six time Paralympic and world champion cyclist, Jiří Ježek]," he said.

“And then I got knocked off my bike when I overtook a car that indicated one way and then decided to change his mind as I was coming past,” he went on.

“Thankfully I’m in one piece, a few cuts to my knee and bruised the pad of my palm. But all in one piece and able to fight another day.”

“The car has two big marks down the side from my shoe and handlebars, hopefully the driver will look twice next time,” he added.

Read our recent interview with Jody Cundy in which among other things he calls for para-cyclists to be given more chances to compete as well as his aims to race for England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year here.
