Sneak peek: Etxeondo clothing

High-end clothing from Spain coming to a bike shop near you in 2013

We’re visiting UK bike parts and accessories distributor Zyro at the moment and we just have time to show you some of the clothing that’s going to be released by Spanish brand Etxeondo. If you’re the sort of person who likes to write “How much?!?!” at the bottom of product stories, start warming up your fingers.

We tested the Etxeondo Feather shorts back in the summer; they’re releasing a jersey to match this year too. As the name suggests, the Feather is extremely lightweight – not so that you get to the top of the climbs any quicker but so that it feels light to wear.

The Feather jersey is made from a super-stretchy and super-soft Meryl fabric that’s designed to be very breathable. There are a zillion panels to give a 3D fit and a ¾ length zip so you can let the breeze blow in. It’ll be available in the spring at £119.

Etxeondo are introducing a couple of products at lower price points than previously. They’re still not cheap compared to Zyro’s Altura brand, for example, but they’re more accessible than before.

The new Bira bib shorts, for example, use a slightly thinner Lycra than you’ll find on Etxeondo’s other bibs but it still feels like quality stuff to us. They’re multi-panelled for a good fit. These are named after the Basque word for ‘stage’, by the way. Oh yeah, we’re fluent in Basque, us. Nearly forgot, the price is £79.99.

The Orhi shorts are new too. They come with a one-piece seamless bib section that’s designed to improve comfort. The lowers are made from panels made from Lycra Sport combined with panels intended to increase breathability further.

The Urraki chamois, made for Etxeondo by Elastic Interface, is multi-depth and certainly looks the part. These are £139.99. The Orhi name is taken from a Pyrenean peak. We’re full of interesting information today.

The Summum winter jersey is already in the range but it’ll be coming in this new red colour next winter. There are a crazy number of panels used here – it’s a complex design to give the garment an anatomical shape. It’s mostly made from Gore Windstopper, Etxeondo being one of just a handful of brands licensed to use the fabric. You get a slimline hood here, although you can easily remove it if you like.

The price? Ah! Thought you might want to know that. It’s £330 – so you’d better try really, really hard not to stack if you buy one of these.

Etxeondo have some new Windstopper tights coming for next winter too. The windproof fabric is used right down the front to keep the cold air out, with extra breathability around the back – a common strategy for both bibs and winter jerseys.

The zipped bib section extends really high up on your chest for extra insulation. These tights use the Carbono chamois that Etxeondo also use in the Attaque shorts that we tested back in the summer. It’s a high-end seat pad that’s made from various densities and thicknesses of memory foam, and it’s very elastic. These are going to be priced at £249.

I've got some 1994 Exte-Ondo ONCE kit still and despite the heavy usage, only now are the shorts really on the way out!

Exte-Ondo has always been good stuff, training and racing in Spain, we always made room for some to bring home.
