Get those snake hips a' rolling and loosen up before you ride...

If you find it hard to sit up straight without slouching, the problem might be in your hips. Here's a great way to strengthen them.

We've talked about how tight hamstrings can affect the pelvis, pulling it out of alignment, but in the case of the hips, these are muscles that aren't generally used in the range of movements we make while cycling.

That means they're not getting used, and can get rather stiff, particularly if you're not cross-training.

Road.cc yoga expert Karen Burt shows us a quick exercise to check how flexible your hips are - you can see how open hers have become through yoga, as opposed to Tony's (he wasn't previously known as a yoga bunny).

These simple exercises (they can be done sitting down!) will make you much looser in the hips, and that can only be a good thing, keeping everything balanced as you develop the muscle groups used for cycling.

After an unpromising start, having to be bribed by her parents to learn to ride without stabilisers, Sarah became rather keener on cycling in her university years, and was eventually persuaded to upgrade to proper road cycling by the prospect of a shiny red Italian bike, which she promptly destroyed by trapping a pair of knickers in the rear derailleur. Sarah writes about about cycling every weekend on road.cc.

Errm this video doesn't seem to work. I could really do to see this one as well, as my hips are a little broken. Could you please make it work? Thanks

Still doesn't work and this ageing body could do with some help in this area: let my add my voice to the small chorus saying that this yoga advice you're offering is so good that we'd like to be able to enjoy it, please.

PS summer here in the Antipodes!
