Sign up as a Le Tour Maker and get involved in next year's Yorkshire Grand Depart

Welcome to Yorkshire needs volunteers to help it put on opening days of 2014 Tour de France

London 2012’s army of Games Makers took levels of enthusiasm among volunteers who make big sporting events tick to new heights last summer, and Welcome to Yorkshire, which is organising next year’s Grand Départ of the Tour de France, is looking to rekindle that spirit as by recruiting thousands of Le Tour Makers for the event.

If you want to get involved, all you have to do at this point is fill in your details on the Le Tour Yorkshire website and they’ll get back to you at the appropriate time. Don’t forget that one of the stages starts somewhere near London – the smart money is on Cambridge – and finishes in the capital.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, explained: “The Games Makers were a huge success in London 2012 so we are looking to emulate and build on that when the eyes of the world are on Yorkshire in 2014.

“We are looking for a team of passionate volunteers who will help us to create the best ever Grand Depart in the history of the Tour de France,” he added.

In France, such volunteers aren't necessary, as any such roles not already filled by staff contracted by ASO are taken by the Gendarmerie. Members of which, while probably given little choice about their assignments, are at least paid. Call me old fashioned, but if someone helps to make an event possible, especially a profit-making one, they should be paid.

Already done so, although I wonder wether they might give precedence to locals.
