Nilox Foolish cameraNilox Foolish HD camera coming to the UK
We saw the launch of the GoPro Hero HD3 last week, and today we've learned of another coming to these shores. The Nilox Foolish is a full HD unit from Italy that has some very interesting little touches and it's now being distributed in the UK by Windwave
At first glance you'll probably think, "That looks a bit like a GoPro," and you'd be right: it does. There's some different stuff going on here though.
For a start, the Foolish has an LCD viewfinder. Nilox have come to the conclusion that you're not always going to need one, and so it's removable. That makes for a much smaller package, but means you can't quite be sure where the camera is pointing. Except with the Nilox, you can. Because it has a laser pointer built in to allow you to target your shot; That's an excellent idea in our book.
The Nilox comes with two waterproof cases, for the camera with and without the LCD screen. Both are IP68 rated to a depth of 60m, twice what most camera cases can manage, so if you like to mix cycling and deep-water Scuba diving (as separate hobbies, rather than trying to do them at the same time) then the Foolish is certainly a camera to look at. Operation with the case on could't be simpler: one button for stills and one for video. There is a remote available too, but that's not coming into the UK just yet.

The super-wide lens has a 175° field of view and can record in a number of formats. Still photos are up to 8MP and the video goes up to 1080p at 30fps. 720p recording is possible at 60fps – there's also a 4x digital zoom at this resolution – and there are lower quality modes too. The camera will ship in the UK with an 8gb micro-SD card so it's ready to go out of the box.
You get a bunch of mounting options. The camera itself has a standard tripod screw and there's flat and curved surface holders included. The mounting hardware looks to be the same as the likes of GoPro and Muvi use, so there's plenty of aftermarket extras knocking about.
The Foolish will retail for £199.95 in the UK and will be available soon; we'll get one in for testing as soon as we can.

I took the plunge at the weekend for one and it arrived yesterday. Disappointed with my GoPro Hero HD that died after 4 months light use, road bike, MTB, paddle-board and snorkeling. No sign of any damage to the camera, best guess from GoPro was a faulty connection. Got the impression from them that it's not uncommon. Got a refund from the UK shop but that left me with several after market mounts and a QR mount stuck to my board.
So the Foolish. Initial impression - survived Interlink Express, the plastic display box was in bits after they'd got their hands on it. So the camera case is tough enough, not a mark on that. The GoPro style mount is a very tight fit on K-Edge mounts, but it does fit. The QR mount fits with no issue in the original GoPro flat mount on my board. The plastic clasp on the side of the case feels to be more substantial than the GoPro version.
The camera itself is about the size of the old style GoPro, with the controls on the top, which I think is an improvement. There are 4 controls there, separate buttons for video and stills, an on/off switch and an audio on/off switch. Only two buttons on the case to operate the stills and video buttons. This concerned me initially as to switch it on you have to remove it from the case. Nilox have covered that though with a standby mode that defaults to 5 minutes and is customizable. All ports on the camera have covers which are lacking from that other camera.
The LCD backpack is small as expected but useable for framing shots. In the box is a larger case for using with the backpack LCD rather than a replacement door. The charger that’s included is a European 2 pin affair, you’ll need an adaptor.
Ran off a few shots last night, no better or worse than the GP in low light, hopefully I’ll get weather like Dave did to try it properly this weekend.

took the camera out to Afan for a bit of MTB fun on the weekend, here are the results. All the sunny bits filmed on saturday on the nilox. Sunday was pretty murky and i was using a Muvi HD10 cause the battery in the nilox had died and i forgot the charger.

looks like it's made by the same people that make the muvi HD10 (http://road.cc/content/review/68124-veho-muvi-hd10-bundle), the display design and menu structure and layout is exactly the same, anyway. it uses the same mounting standard as the gopro and muvi HD cameras, works in the gopro mount on my helmet.
I tried my muvi remote (the nilox one looks the same) but no dice, probably sends a slightly different signal
the laser sight is pretty cool
when we do i'll get a move on though, promise

Was looking at this last night to replace a dead GoPro Hero HD, seems to sit between the GP3 White and Silver models.
One thing missing from the spec list was if you can set it to take stills at a determined interval, on the GP you can at 1, 2, 5, 10 etc seconds which was the reason I got it.
It would also be nice to know if it does fit on GP mounts before buying it.
it definitely does time lapse, as windwave have a time lapse vid of their stall at the cycle show.
when we get one we'll check for sure whether it fits on GP/Muvi mounts. it will though.

the uk specific bundle doesn't have the remote, although windwave are looking at bringing it in separately i think
the red one's a ducati special, but it's not coming to the uk. at least not at the moment
Now that looks sweet, I like the viewfinder idea, makes it much more functional off the bike aswell.
