Great Britain's Lucy Garner has retained her world title in the women's junior road race in the Netherlands today. The Leicester rider, who turned 18 just yesterday, got a leadout from Elinor Barker, winner of the junior time trial championship earlier this week to win the rainbow jersey in Valkenburg, 12 months after her victory in Copenhagen. Norway's Eline Gleditsch Brustad finished second, with Anna Zita Maria Stricker of Italy third.

With the tempo increasing throughout the five lap, 65 kilometre race, the climbs including the Cauberg, crested 1.7 kilometres from the finish line, thinned the field out until there was a front group left of around 25 riders at the bell.

On the final ascent of the climb that is the signature feature of Ardennes Classic the Amstel Gold Race, the field, originally comprising more than 80 women, splintered further with around ten riders getting clear, but some riders managed to get back on, the group doubling in size as the race headed towards the closing kilometre.

With the road flattening out for that run-in to the finish, Barker produced what was described as a stunning lead out for Garner to complete what had been a strong team ride by all five British women in the race, the others being Emily Kay, Jessie Walker and Molly Weaver.
