Graeme Obree attacked in pub in Scotland

Hour record winner preparing for 100mph land speed record

Graeme Obree, the former hour record holder known as the Flying Scotsman, is recovering after an uprovoked attack in a pub in Ayrshire.

Obree, 46, is currently building his own bike in an attempt to beat the human-powered land speed record in the US next month - a feat that would take his speed over 100mph.

Police were called to the Flask bar after midnight on Wednesday, but the man who hit Obree in the face had already left. Obree had his lip split open in the incident.

A source quoted by the Scottish Sun said: "“It was a totally unprovoked attack. Graham is fine now.”

We showed you a video of Obree's maiden voyage on his bike, which was built in his kitchen. He'll be riding 'Beastie' in a head-down, prone position.

The idea is clearly to get into a lower and therefore more aerodynamic position, but it doesn't exactly look comfortable. In the video, though, Obree says it “feels great!”

All the best from Road.cc, Graeme.

Obree is a great British eccentric so let's hope he recovers quickly and the attacking scum gets the appropriate sentence.

Get well soon, Graeme. I gather you made a fine contribution a day or two ago on a radio phone-in about the Armstrong case, to the discomfort of the BBC presenter. Chapeau to you. And I didn't know you were going for the HPV speed record: great!

Interesting - can you tell us any more or point to a 'listen again' slot?

I know G.O. is eccentric, but TBH that's his endearing quality.
I too hope the scum have been captured on CCTV that will lead to an arrest and successful conviction.

@Angelfishsolo, it was great to see your name on here when I read this story. I don't normally use Road CC but I've now registered.
Anyhow, I sincerely hope you are doing well. A lot of people genuinely miss your input on a certain other site. Take care 103

It's an unfortunate fact that if you hang out in a pub and are known for being out of the ordinary then you are more likely to attract the unwanted attention of someone from further down the evolutionary scale.

I have followed Grahams antics for years (even managed to swing my degree studies towards a subject that let me waffle on about him!) and I really hope he succeeds in this latest venture. As someone whose used to shrugging off adversity I reckon this little incident will barely register on his radar!

Come on the BEASTIE!

preferably by half a dozen well-built cycling fans in a poorly-lit back street.

Graeme really doesn't deserve this stuff. Let's hope he gets the opportunity to give the record his best shot (and of course I'm wanting him to absolutely demolish it). Go Graeme!

Well-built cycling fans? I wonder if half a dozen of these exist!

Of course - Just as there are plenty of fat, lazy football supporters and plenty of Formula One followers that can barely manage a three point turn, there are also many cycling fans that could be described as well built.
I wouldn't want to argue with Chris Hoy, Grégory Baugé and this bloke in a dark ally...
even if he has only got one bib strap. Weirdo.
