Police appeal for help identifying dead cyclist

Man collided with a car near Peebles on Monday

Police are asking the public for help in identifying a cyclist who died in a crash near Peebles on Monday afternoon.

The man, aged in his 40s or 50s, was riding a blue and white Peugeot road bike and wearing a yellow jacket, a blue and yellow cycling top, and black cycling shorts.

Borders Police say that he veered across the road and collided with a southbound Fiat Panda on the A703 Peebles to Edinburgh road about 300 metres from the town.

It is believed that he might have felt unwell, causing him to swerve. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident happened at around 4.20pm.

Sergeant Brian Jones of Lothian and Borders Police told the Southern Reporter: “There may be someone out there who recognises the description of this cyclist and I would appeal to them to come forward as a matter of urgency.

“I would also appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward - they may have vital information that could greatly assist us in establishing the full circumstances.”

The road was closed for three-and-a-half hours while experts examined the scene and the vehicles.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Galashiels Police Station on 01896 664545 or the Force Communication Centre on 0131 311 3131.

Well there is 'troll' in his username.

Anyway, let's stop feeding him. This thread is about a poor chap dying. RIP. The car driver must be pretty traumatised too.

Seems to me that special-interest websites publishing specially selected special-interest news stories, can reinforce all kinds of prejudices in people who struggle to keep things in perspective.

Ok, maybe wishing death on them is a little harsh. A broken leg? 39

But its disgusting what they have said. There seems to be a number of people coming on here lately, just to comment on news stories and blame cars, drivers and anything but cyclists for everything, Its pissing me right off and just shows certain sections of the cycling community is a very bad light.

Well, then instead of getting your knickers in a twist and wishing ill health on others, maybe you should back away from the keyboard, take a deep breath and then go outside for a walk.

That or go die in a fire! (Did you see what I did there? 3 )

Coming on here lately? I've been a member of this site for 5 years.

How long have you been a member?

You come on this site as a lover of the automobile and want nothing to change regarding road laws that allow car drivers to kill cyclists with impunity.

Seriously? You hope somebody dies because they posted a comment that offends you?

What precisely offends you about this comment?

The driver of a car kills a cyclist that is all too much of a problem in the UK (in the Netherlands the driver would automatically be charged no matter what).

In the UK, all the driver has to say was, "sorry m8 I didn't see you." Or, "he swerved in front of me." and all he will get is maybe a fine.

And you wish me death?

You are angry? Well I am angry that hundreds of cyclists are carelessly killed on UK roads because of laws and attitudes that are ignorant.

"It is believed that he might have felt unwell, causing him to swerve into the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene".

Oh, really? He felt unwell? He felt unwell and swerved into the car? How fkcing convenient.

I say, the car carelessly hit and killed this poor cyclist. Reckless manslaughter. Prove me wrong you "experts who are examining the scene."
