Raleigh's 125th anniversary bike at the Taipei Cycle Show

An international Raleigh celebrates 125 years of the marque's existence...

Tucked away in a corner of the show was a nice surprise from Raleigh. The venerable British marque now manufactures in the Far East, and it seems the rest of the world is enthusiastic enough about its heritage to produce this special, limited-edition Raleigh Record Ace, to celebrate 125 years of the brand.

A Raleigh UK representative in Taipei talked us through the bike, which is, in essence, a re-issue of the old RRA. It’s a lugged steel frame made from 531, with a nice little rack, sensible mudguards and a set of randonneur handlebars.

Funny thing about it is, though, is that the project was brought together by someone at Raleigh Japan, so underneath that Brooks is a Nitto seatpost; the stem is also Nitto, and I’d wager the bars are too. Tyres are Kenda and the crankset is Sugino. It all looks proper - they’re classic Japanese brands after all - and the international mix is very nice.

Oh, and kids, those things on the frame are called down-tube shifters. Nice touch.

We were also liking the pictorial history of Raleigh advertising around the booth.

Hmmm, since Raleigh produced their 'centenary' gold coloured bike in 1987 I'm wondering how this can be 125th anniversary? The RRA is actually 85 years old from its first production however.

In any case it's a bit mince, the idea is nice, execution is well off.

No band on bottle cages, as mentioned above frame is too small given the s.post and stem, slotted/drilled brake levers would have looked nicer as would gum hoods,. In fact a pair of centre pulls instead of those ugly dual pivots would have improved things too.

Oh and those brakes aren't going to stop shit what with the pads being a mile away from the rim, short rack, hmmm, it's not doing it for me on that frame, what else, small flange hubs, I don't think so!

And what's with the braze on front mech with a band adapter?

Soz but don't like it and the 125th anniversary was 6 years ago and all that.

frames too small for the rider way too much seat post and stem showing, they're just called gear levers (or were)

Pity that they haven't fitted the front mudguard so that it follows the curve of the tyre.
