Tour of Qatar Stage 6: Cavendish crashes as FDJ's Démare wins stage, Boonen takes overall

Touch of wheels brings World Champ down as winner of rainbow jersey in U23 race at Copenhagen takes stage

A touch of wheels with the line in sight saw Mark Cavendish denied a third stage victory in the 2012 Tour of Qatar, FDJ-BigMat's Arnaud Démare taking the sprint ahead of Katusha's Denis Galimzyanov with Rabobank's Mark Renshaw third. Tom Boonen of Omega Pharma-Quick Step came home safely in the bunch to win the overall title for the fourth time.

Each time the Belgian has won the race, that early season form has translated into big victory in the Spring Classics season - he won the Tour of Flanders in 2006, and Paris-Roubaix in both 2008 and 2009.

Cavendish, following Tyler Farrar's wheel and well-placed to go for his third victory of the race, didn't seem too have suffered any significant injuries as he rolled over the line after remounting following the crash, which occurred around 150 metres out.

Like Cavendish, the 20-year-old Démare returned home from last September's UCI Road World Championships in Coenhagen with a rainbow jersey, winning the Under-23 Men's Road Race title.

Cav crashes too much these days, he takes too many risks given how much better than everyone else he is. Thankfully he has avoided serious injury so far.

Rubbish - his fearlessness in moving around the peloton is one of the things that puts him at the very top of the tree. He wouldn't have squeezed through and won the rainbow jersey if it wasn't for that. Better to crash sometimes and win lots than never crash and win sometimes...

Renshaw was on the receiving end of a head-shove (not quite a butt) a few hundred meters out, I wonder what he made of that.

Farrar didn't crash, nor was he the cause,

Just as Cav opened up the tank, Degenkolb came across and blocked him in, forcing Cav into the back of Farrar and he lost his balance and went down with everyone else avoiding him

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Tyler Farrar is jinxed? Seems to get more than his fair share of punctures and crashes in the last 10 km.
