Meet the Maker: Bespoked video 2 on Paulus Quiros

Second in the series of Bespoked Bristol videos leading up to the custom framebuilders' show in March...

In the week the Bespoked organisers announced that Bristol's own Argos Racing Cycles as well as London clothing specialists Rapha will be exhibiting at the second running of the show next March 2012, they also launched the second video in their series on custom framebuilders 'at home' this one featuring South Wales newboy Paulus Quiros.

Or newboys. Paulus Quiros is not really 'a' framebuilder; it's a pair working in tandem, Jonathan Paulus and José Quiros and considering this is only their second year in business, they've made quite a mark on the UK custom-building scene. The first Bespoked Bristol earlier this year was also their first public showing and people seemed to warm to their approach which is quite unlike anything either from the UK tradition led at the show by Brian Rourke, or the new 'Portland' school exemplified by Tom Donhoe who won 'Best in Show.'

Not least impressive was that they showed the most extraordinary tandem that even otherwise unsold tandemists were looking at with wistful, dreamy eyes; all swoopes and curves. The designs of their bikes seem to owe as much to the ornamental ironwork decorating everything in Quiros's native Barcelona. Things like brake bridges that normally curve have points; conventionally straight tubes have curves; it's all very lovely.

I have one of their bikes. Absolute work of art, and so much fun to ride.
