The number of cyclists killed on London’s roads during 2011 has risen to 16 with news of yet another fatality involving an HGV.
The incident occurred at around 1015 this morning on Abbey Street in Bermondsey, which is close to a number of locations where cyclists have lost their lives in recent years.
The Metropolitan Police has confirmed to road.cc that the victim is a woman aged in her early 20s, and that no arrests have yet been made in connection with the incident.
The safety of cyclists in London, particularly around HGVs, has been the subject of intense focus in recent weeks following three fatalities within the past two months.
In October, student Deep Lee was killed at the junction of York Way and Pentonville Road in Kings Cross when she was crushed by a lorry.
Later that month, Brian Dorling lost his life at Bow Roundabout, where another cyclist, Svitlana Tereschenko, would also die less than three weeks afterwards on 11 November; both of those incidents involved tipper lorries.
We will provide further details of this latest tragic incident once we have them.
Sickening. Thoughts and condolences to the family.
When are TFL going to realise HGV and cyclists cannot mix especially with the mentality most of these HGV drivers have?
Other than banning all HGV's from inner London I honestly dont know how this horrendous situation is going to be eased.
As cyclists we have just as much right to use the roads as any other person. Lets hope the lady didn't suffer.
Stumpy
How many females and how many males? Because it seems to me to be a lot of females and pehaps could be attributed to something they have in common which might be riding style or assertiveness?
