Dauphiné Libéré Stage 3: Terpstra takes stage and the overall

Cadel Evans drops to second in overall

Dutchman Niki Terpstra (Team Milram) won today's stage of the Dauphiné Libéré from Tournus to St Etienne and in the process took the race leader's yellow jersey from Cadel Evans who ended the day in fifth place overall.

The Milram rider was part of a five man break that got away 34Km in to the rolling 182Km route and managed to stay out for the rest of the day. With 10Km to go the break still had 2 mins on the peloton and it becam evident that Terpstra, who started the day in 12th place overall 41seconds down on Evans, could take the lead overall.

This he duly did making a good day's work even better by beating AG2R's Ludovic Turpin in the sprint to take the stage win as well.

Evans finished in the main bunch 1:32 later and so Terpstra goes into tomorrow's individual time trial holding a 51 second lead which he has promised to defend.
