10,000 cyclists head for the York Cycle Show during Bike Week

Bargain bikes and charity rides at long-running event

Thousands of cyclists are expected to flock to York next month for a national cycle show - the grand finale to Bike Week.

Cyclists from all over the UK will attend the country's largest mass participation cycling event, one of the highlights of the cycling calendar, which has been running since 1945.

The York Cycle Show, on June 20-21, gives cyclists a chance to bag bargain bikes and accessories, including second hand and vintage bikes. 10,000 visitors are expected and will be entertained by stunt shows and cycling challenges.

Chair of the CTC York Cycle Show Committee, Paul Hepworth said: “The York Cycle Show is one of the biggest events for cyclists. Since it started in 1945, it has encouraged thousands to take up cycling. If you are a cyclist or want to start cycling it is a great place to get information, advice and a bike at a bargain price. There’s also a range of guided rides around York to suit every cyclist.”

The event takes place at the Knavesmire Racecourse and offers a huge range of activities over the weekend for everyone from novice cyclists to experts including:

· The chance to buy bargain bikes and cycle accessories

· Saddlebag Sale of second hand parts

· Bike auction

· Vintage bikes

· Mountain bike stunt shows, arena displays and exhibitions.

· CTC’s Ron Kitching Challenge 100k and 150k Ride

· Day rides

· The Young Riders’ Challenge

· Family rides organised by Charity Adventure in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support

· ‘End to End to end Parkinsons’ cyclists riding from Lands End to John O’Groats for charity.

· Sunday service for cyclists at York Minster followed by the Grand Cycle Parade

· On-site camping & caravan spaces available

· Real ale bar

· Food stalls

Admission to most of the York Cycle Show is free. Adults who want to visit the trade marquees will need to buy a £2.50 event programme (accompanied under 16s free).
