Police seek driver of green Audi A3 following incident last Friday lunchtime

South Yorkshire Police have issued an urgent witness appeal after a hit and run incident in Sheffield left a 48-year-old male cyclist fighting for his life. The incident took place on Longley Lane at 12.10pm on Friday 16 September.

According to a statement from the police force, the cylist had been heading downhill on Longley Lane towards Barnsley Road. At the foot of the hill, a motorist driving a light green Audi A3 moved to the wrong side of the road, aparently trying to overtake him, but instead hitting the cyclist. The motorist did not stop.

The cyclist is reported to be "in a life threatening condition" after suffering head injuries and a broken hip in the collision.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the incident or who has information regarding the car and driver, as well as the motorist himself, to get in touch as a matter of urgency. They add that the car itself is likely to have been damaged during the incident.

Anyone who has information is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202020 quoting incident number 468 of 16 September.

Born in Scotland, Simon moved to London aged seven and now lives in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds with his miniature schnauzer, Elodie. He fell in love with cycling one Saturday morning in 1994 while living in Italy when Milan-San Remo went past his front door. A daily cycle commuter in London back before riding to work started to boom, he's been news editor at road.cc since 2009. Handily for work, he speaks French and Italian. He doesn't get to ride his Colnago as often as he'd like, and freely admits he's much more adept at cooking than fettling with bikes.

Any serious bash with a bike will do substantial damage to the car, I know - I wrote off a car that ran into me but luckily came out of it with a big bruise on the backside and a small chip on my spine, which grumbled on for 5-6 years.

Could you perhaps run through what you wrote Simon - it doesn't make any sense on the sequence of events. I know a fair number of cyclists in Sheffield. Hope the LTC is stabilising.
