Andrea Pinarello dies of heart attack aged just 40

Son of Italian frame-builder's founder had just completed Stage 1 of amateur Giro del Friuli...

Andrea Pinarello, whose father founded the frame-making business that bears the family name and supplies Team Sky and Movistar, has died at the age of 40 after suffering a heart attack at the end of the first stage of the amateur Giro del Friuli, in which he was taking part. His widow Gloria is expecting the couple’s third child.

Aged 40, Andrea was the youngest son of ex-professional cyclist Giovanni Pinarello and was head of marketing at the family-owned business. Previously, he had himself been a decent junior rider and had also played rugby, his other sporting passion besides bike racing.

In a statement on its website, Team Sky said that it “sends our deepest sympathies to the Pinarello family following the tragic news of Andrea Pinarello’s passing.

“Since our inception as a team, Pinarello have been a part of the Team Sky family and we are all devastated to lose such a young, vibrant person from our team and our sport.

“We want to convey our sincere condolences to the Pinarello family for their loss,” a sentiment echoed by all of us here at road.cc.
