Oxford Cycle Workshop scoops national award for innovation in co-operatives

Recognition comes less than a year after it increased its emphasis on community outreach projects

The Oxford Cycle Workshop has received national recognition beyond the cycling industry after winning the Innovation in Co-operative Enterprise award at the annual Co-operative Congress being held in Birmingham this weekend.

In scooping the award, the community-owned enterprise beat off competition from Co-operative Energy, Community Renewable Energy North West, Revolver Co-operative Ltd and Whomadeyourpants? Limited.

Nominations for the awards were made by members of the co-operative movement, with the winners selected by a panel of Co-operatives UK Board Members as well as representatives of the awards sponsors.

As we reported last November, Oxford Cycle Workshop has closed down its retail operations – among other things, it had acted as the local distributor for Basque workers’ co-operative-owned brand Orbea – to focus on community outreach projects.

A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.
