Salsa recall handlebar stems

Bought a Salsa CroMoto stem recently? Read this…

Salsa have announced a voluntary recall on all CroMoto S.U.L 25.4 and 26.0 threadless stems and all CroMoto S.U.L. 26.0 quill stems sold as individual aftermarket units after 1 April 2010. No other models are affected. A small number of these stems have been sold in the UK. So if you’re using a Salsa stem bought in the last few months, it might be worth checking which one model it is because it might not be safe.

The stems are distinctive. They’re black, have the word Salsa painted on the extension, and come with a hash mark on the inside of the bar clamp area. If you have one of these, don’t use it anymore. Return it to an authorized Salsa dealer for a free inspection and a replacement or a full refund.

The recall notice has been issued because the stems can crack or break – clearly bad news. Salsa has received a report of one of these stems breaking, resulting in minor injuries.

If you can’t return the stem to the shop where you bought it for any reason, click here  to find your closest relevant dealer.

This is the second time Salsa have issued a voluntary recall of the CroMoto S.U.L threadless stem. In early 2009 the company called back 8000 stems manufactured between 2007 and 2008.

I would guess that it is the weld which can crack (though that's pretty unusual for steel). Stems with welding always put me off. I always go for forged ones, ie: made from one piece of metal.

Saw this the other day, hoped it was just a re-post of the original recall to catch the stragglers. Clearly bad news for salsa on what is essentially their one remaining 'classic' product. Winder what they are doing different to make these new stems break compared the the originals?
