Marco Pantani's yellow jersey stolen from exhibition at Milan Cycle Show

Jersey from '98 Tour win goes missing in mysterious circumstances...

Thieves are reported to have stolen a yellow jersey worn by late the Marco Pantani during his ride to victory in the 1998 Tour de France from the EICMA motorcycle and cycling show in Milan. The theft is reported to have taken place on the night of the 6th of November from a temporary exhibition featuring items from the famous Madonna del Ghisallo church and cycling museum.

The exhibition was not in the main halls but small showroom also displaying the wares of Gewiss* a company long associated with cycle sponsorship

The stolen Pantani jersey was donated to the church and museum of the Madonna del Ghisallo in 2006 by Pantani's family and was part of a display honouring three time Giro d'Italia winner Fiorenzi Magni, Magni's 1949 Tour de France bike as part of the exhbition and one of the miglia rosa he won. 1998 represented the high point of Pantani's career he won not only the Tour but the Giro d'Italia too in buccaneering style dominating in the mountains.

By coincidence the road.cc team visited the exhibition the day before the theft and while we did spot two yellow jersey's on display neither of them was Marco Pantani's, one (pictured above) belonged to Mario Cipollini and was worn by him for two days in the 1993 Tour when he was riding for GB-MG and the other was actually not a yellow jersey at all but one of Tony Rominger's trio of gold jerseys won during his Vuelta conquering exploits of the mid-90s. Maybe the attentive museum staff had already put it away for the night – it was closing time when we popped in.

Hopefully we'll get another chance to see it, if you have any information that might leads to its return the Museo del Ghisallo is appealling for information. The curators may be contacted by email at info [at] museodelghisallo.it.
