Australian men match earlier women's road race gold

Cav's brave challenge fades but Millar claims bronze...

Australia has made it a road racing gold medal clean-sweep  in Delhi as Allan Davis emulated the success of his compatriot Rochelle Gilmore in the earlier women’s event.

Davis took gold ahead of New Zealander Hayden Roulston with Scotland’s David Millar, taking part in his first Commonwealth Games, claiming bronze.

A tactically engrossing race saw a group of eight well clear of the peloton at the bell for the final lap of the 168km event.

The leaders included Mark Cavendish and David Millar but with 10km to go they fragmented into two groups of four with Millar in the lead bunch and Cavendish and Davis in the chasers.

In the final few kilometres Davis bridged the gap, shortly after which Cavendish sat up, apparently a spent force having been compelled to counter numerous attacks clearly designed to eliminate him from the final reckoning.

At the denouement Australia’s Chris Sutton led out compatriot and world championship bronze medallist Davis, with the Astana sprint specialist easily outpacing Roulston and Millar to the line.

Chris Sutton came home fourth while Mark Cavendish cruised home in 7th position.
