Protest today at Kensington Town Hall to call for safer streets

Campaigners for safer streets for vulnerable road users will stage a protest today outside Kensington Town Hall.

The group Stop Killing Cyclists is also holding a die-in a vigil in memory of the female cyclist killed by a left-turning tipper truck at the junction of Grosvenor Road and Chelsea Bridge last month.

While the fatal crash took place on the side of the junction within the territory of the London Borough of Westminster, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has been accused of failing to provide safe infrastructure for people on bikes.

Last month, Transport for London (TfL) announced plans for a consultation into Cycle Superhighway 9 from Kensington Olympia to Brentford.

But the eastern end of the route will finish at the border between Hammersmith & Fulham and RKBC, since the latter has resisted calls to provide separated cycling infrastructure.

Meanwhile, its controversial mixed used scheme on Exhibition Road, which sees motorists, cyclists and pedestrians share the space on the road, hit the headlines at the weekend when a driver blacked out and crashed, injuring 11 people.

Stop Killing Cyclists is calling on RKBC to embrace protected infrastructure for cyclists and review the design of the junction at Chelsea Bridge.

The protest will take place outside Kensington Town Hall on Horton Street, London W8 7NX from 5.30pm to 7pm on Thursday evening.
