Our Tour de France Strava ride of day on Stage 7 – Daryl Impey

Orica-BikeExchange rider finished second after spending the day in the break

You’d have got long odds on Daryl Impey finishing second when the race hit the Pyrenees, but after a long day in the break, the South African managed to ditch Vincenzo Nibali on the final climb before outsprinting Daniel Navarro at the line.

The 162km stage was won by Steve Cummings (Dimenson Data) with Impey just over a minute back. His stats show an average power output of 292 watts over almost exactly four hours.

Impey’s efforts up the Col d’Aspin were enough to earn him eighth place on the Strava leaderboard – a 31-minute effort during which he averaged 390 watts.

Here’s his power curve for the day.

Swiss rider Sebastian Reichenbach was a couple of minutes quicker up the Col d’Aspin and is the new King of the Mountain. This will be little consolation to FDJ, however, as the team’s main hope, Thibaut Pinot, saw his overall hopes dashed on this stage.

Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) successfully retained the yellow jersey after making the break and finishing in fifth place. He seems to be running a few days’ behind with his Strava uploads, but the stage five win which earned him the yellow jersey is now on the site.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.
