Cameron Meyer leaves Dimension Data due to "ongoing personal issues"

Dimension Data has released Australian rider Cameron Meyer from his contract with immediate effect at the 28-year-old’s own request.

In a statement released through team that he joined from Orica-GreenEdge at the start of the season, Meyer said: “Unfortunately I have made the tough decision to leave Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, due to ongoing personal issues I have had of recent.

“I have been unable to train or race at the required level that is needed for the WorldTour.

“I cannot thank [team owner] Douglas Ryder enough for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing programme.

“To be able to see at first hand the impact the team makes in Africa through the Qhubeka Foundation and for me to have involvement was truly inspiring.“

Meyer added: “I wish the entire team the best of luck and look forward to watching their many successes to come.“

While the exact reasons for his decision remain unknown, he team said that it wished Meyer “the best for his future.”

Overall winner of the Tour Down Under in 2011, Meyer also helped his former team Orica-GreenEdge win team time trial stages at both the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, and also has two stage wins in the Tour de Suisse to his name.

His biggest successes came on the track, however, where between 2009 and 2012, he won six world championship titles – three in the points race, two in the Madison and one in the team pursuit.

2012 also saw him win three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, in the points race, scratch race and team pursuit.

Meyer began 2016 by finishing second to Trek-Segafredo’s Jack Bobridge in the Australian national road race championship. His last race was the Tour de Romandie, which finished on 1 May.
