Nicolas Roche out of hospital after second spider bite in last few months

Team Sky rider twice hospitalised

Team Sky rider Nicolas Roche has joked that he is not yet climbing the walls, despite being hospitalised by a spider bite for the second time in the last few months.

The 31-year-old was first bitten in November while training on Australia’s Gold Coast following his honeymoon.

The bite kept him off the bike for four days and he has again been hospitalised following a second bite – this time for three days, plus additional time off the bike as he recovers.

Roche, who won stage 18 of last year’s Vuelta a Espana, has since tweeted: “Good to be out of hospital. 4/5 days to recover, and good news i should be able to get back to normal training next week.”

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Wounds like that are often mistaken for spider bites. Many times, it's a staph infection. As staph is systemic, the boils/wounds can appear anywhere on the body.
I had a wound on the top of my thigh that looked JUST like that, and it was diagnosed as a spider bite. It grew to the size of a 50 cent piece, and was open. I lost all of the flesh, and subcutaneous fat in the area. It healed, and I thought all was okay...until I got another wound exactly like the first, on my backside. Evil...
I went to the ER, and they did a staph test. It was a MRSA infection. I was on injectable and oral antibiotics for 3 weeks.
Don't immediately assume it's an insect bite...

Maybe he should stop keeping spiders and find another hobby.

Well, well!  My wife needed anti-biotics for a mysterious bite on leg last summer.   The bite looked exactly like the one on Nicholas's arm.
