GoPro Hero+ £169 action camera with Bluetooth and Wifi launched

Action camera specialist launches new budget priced action camera amid growing competition

GoPro has expanded its action camera range with the launch of the new Hero+, which costs £169 and offers Bluetooth and Wifi connectivity and full 1080p 60fps video recording. It has also dropped the price of its tiny Session camera to £250.

The new Hero+ slots in between the £110 entry-level Hero and the £250 Hero+ LCD. In features the new Hero+ is similar to the more expensive Hero+LCD, with 1080p 60fps filming and 8MP photos and Bluetooth and Wifi for advanced controls and sharing but forgoes the LCD touchscreen to hit this new price point.

With Bluetooth you can sync the Hero+ to a compatible smartphone and use the GoPro App to control the camera remotely, preview your filming and create short highlight edits on your phone or tablet. Wifi allows you to easily share to your favoured social network including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Garmin launches new Virb X and Virb XE action cameras

The Hero+ is waterproof to 40m and weighs just 121g and is compatible with all the GoPro mounts. The new camera also features an Auto Low Light mode which adapts the frame rate to suit the available light.

- TomTom launches £300 Bandit action camera

GoPro is facing increasing competition in a market is has dominated, with the likes of Shimano, Sony, Garmin and TomTom trying to muscle in on the action camera sector. Bloomberg reports that GoPro is down 53% in 2015 (founder Nick Woodman has seen his fortune fall $1.4 billion this year) amid increasing competition.

- Latest reviews of Helmet cameras

Along with the release of the Hero+, GoPro has also dropped the price of its Hero4 Session. It’s now £250, down from a launch price in July of £329.99, suggesting that sales haven't been strong. The Session is GoPro's smallest video camera and is 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the Hero4.

They should think rather about changing its shape. Cubes fail as action cams, especially when they are used in high speed, as e.g. on a motorcycle. For me the perfect shape for an action camera has Drift Stealth of Ghost. Action cams should be that aerodynamic.

Thats the only thing that puts me off buying one of these.

Would be nice to have a review of the various action cams, with particular note to how well they record number plates in low light (rather than how awesome snowboarding looks).

Wow, for an article which is lifted wholesale from a Press Release, a good old proof read would have helped rid the errors which have crept in.

108-p (wow, that's amazing)
Hero+LCS (Liquid Crystal Screen?)
with 1080p60 (60 what?)

I'm being hugely pedantic, but I have to proof press releases as part of my job, and one thing which must always be correct is the tech spec.

I'm being hugely pedantic...

It is a fairly common practice to put the frame rate immediately after the video mode when talking about them, e.g. 1080p30, 720p60.

Was very interested in the session, then saw the eye watering RRP and bailed, might be back in the game though.

It's perfect for an inconspicuous front camera for commuting when paired with a fly6 at the rear.

Hmm, now at these prices I'm tempted.
