In an event that the Daily Express would almost certainly have described as "glittering" if it had covered it, the explosive HTC-Columbia pro Mark Cavendish was crowned last night as Isle of Man Sportsman of the Year 2009 at the Villa Marina, Douglas.

Manx Radio  is reporting this morning that everyone's favourite feisty rocket cyclist is now the top Manx sportsman, continuing a long and glorious list of names that we're presently at a complete loss to find.

Anyway, needless to say, Cav was "otherwise engaged" not least in preparing for his big challenge at next month's Tour of California. And he's been busy getting into what looks like a fascinating war of words telling The Guardian that riding in the same team as fellow HTC-Columbia professional André Greipel "is not a problem for me, because I'm a better rider".

That's good, then.
